SEL 101: A PROPOSAL FOR SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING FOR TEACHERS
94% of states have SEL standards
83% of teachers want SEL training 18% of states address SEL in preservice teacher training |
In January, 2015, Representative Susan Davis (D-CA) introduced H.R. 497, the “Supporting Social and Emotional Learning Act” which would amend the Education Services Reform Act of 2002 to include requirements for teacher training in social and emotional learning. Presently, social and emotional learning is addressed in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) but no formal coursework or training in social-emotional learning is required (and is often not even offered) as part of pre-service teaching or credentialing programs. I proposed a potential overview of what such a training might look like.
